Emu Park sewage treatment plant

Emu Park is a coastal township located on the Capricorn Coast of Central Queensland, approximately 20 kilometres south-east of Yeppoon and 45 kilometres north-east of Rockhampton. The township overlooks Keppel Bay and the islands of the Southern Great Barrier Reef, including Great Keppel Island.

In 2011, Factor UTB was engaged by Fitzroy River Water, the water authority of Rockhampton Regional Council, to design and construct a new Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to service the Emu Park community. The facility was developed to provide reliable wastewater treatment for a growing residential and tourist population, with a clear focus on protecting the environmentally sensitive
waters of Keppel Bay and the adjacent Great Barrier Reef.

The treatment plant was designed with a peak day inflow capacity of approximately 3.7ML and a BOD₅ removal capacity of 903kg/day. Engineering design and construction were undertaken in accordance with cyclonic region requirements. The resilience of this approach was demonstrated in

February 2015, when Cyclone Marcia (Category 4) made landfall adjacent to the treatment facility. No damage was sustained, and treatment operations continued uninterrupted throughout and following the storm event.
