Sludge treatment systems

Supporting regional communities through the provision of efficient and effective sewage treatment systems requiring minimal operator input has been the core focus of Factor UTB’s success. Since 2000, Factor UTB has delivered thirteen sewage treatment facilities across regional South Australian communities, together with a further eight installations delivered into regional communities
throughout Australia over the same period.

Ceduna is a regional centre located on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula, approximately 770 kilometres by road from Adelaide. The township sits on the shores of Murat Bay and serves as the gateway to the Nullarbor Plain and the Far West Coast of South Australia. The climate is semi-arid, characterised by low annual rainfall, hot summers, and mild winters. This presents challenges for water supply and infrastructure management.

Ceduna operates a Community Wastewater Management System (CWMS) consisting of STED (Septic Tank Effluent Disposal) scheme, where on-site septic tanks provide primary treatment before effluent is conveyed to centralised treatment infrastructure. In 2010, Factor UTB was engaged to design and construct the treatment facility to manage this wastewater stream.

The plant incorporates dual Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBRs) operating in direct-feed configuration, with a combined daily treatment capacity of up to 1.9ML and a peak BOD₅ removal capacity of 1,026 kg/day. The system services approximately 7,000 residents and produces a recycled water that is applied to the irrigation of community green spaces and the foreshore precinct. This has improved local amenity, reduced reliance on potable water supplies and provided environmental safeguards consistent with state regulatory frameworks.
