Separating Water from Waste

Project Report on As Suwaiq Sewerage Treatment Plant.

The Factor UTB Sequencing Batch Reactor wastewater treatment system is used in the construction of a single tank sewerage treatment plant at As Suwaiq in Oman. The plant was completed and handed over to the municipality in July 1999. The photograph below shows a balance tank, the reactor basin and four effluent holding tanks. The simple geometry and low tankage means a minimum of land area is required.

As Suwaiq, Single Tank Factor UTB SBR completed 1999, Municipal Waste water. All water will be reused for irrigation, changing the desert into paradise

The Factor UTB SBR allows wastewater treatment to the highest standard for smaller communities. Effluent parameters at 95%ile can be achieved within three weeks of operation:

BOD5 5 mg/l
TSS 10 mg/l
Total Nitrogen 10 mg/l
Total Phosphorous 2 mg/l

Disinfection is provided by chlorine dosing in the holding tanks. The water is recycled for use in irrigation, the greening of parks and for industry. The availability of recycled water will allow the local desert to soon bloom with plant life, a transformation into paradise. These same high standards can be achieved in relocatable systems for applications in areas such as the Resource Extraction Industry, Emergency Relief and Military Uses. Up to 80% of the wastewater can be recovered for reuse.

Minimum Moving Parts

The As Suwaiq SBR uses only one liquid motive pump to distribute influent and mix the liquor for processing. A small waste sludge transfer pump removes excess sludge to the drying beds. Only a single jet aerator, the Factor UTB Flymarator, is needed for aeration and mixing.

Consequently the number of moving parts is minimized and the unnecessary movement of wastewater from tank to tank is eliminated. The best quality equipment is used in As Suwaiq and this proved to be an economially sound solution. Both power consumption and maintenance requirements are minimized resulting in lower operation cost.

Automatic Process

The plant is controlled by a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and is fully automatic. The plant operator is only required for sludge wasting which only takes a few minutes each week.

Low Construction and Operation Costs

The single reactor basin, simple pipe geometry and minimal moving parts used in this project resulted in a low construction cost.

The automatic operation and low maintenance mean the plant only requires minimal operator time which together with low power consumption gives a low operation cost.

Low costs per household were previously only achievable with large-scale systems but are now within the reach of small and medium communities.
